Alicorns Discorded CrappyUnicorn

Detail from "Discorded" by CrappyUnicorn

Alicorn is a term commonly used within the fandom to describe Pegasus unicorns like Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, Princess Cadance, and, as of Magical Mystery Cure, Twilight Sparkle. The show itself does not use the term until the episode Magic Duel, referring to the princesses only as "unicorns" before that. Magical Mystery Cure is the first episode to explicitly use the term to refer to the princess' type. Luna is also called a "Pegasus unicorn" on Hasbro's My Little Pony Facebook page. Léon, a young Alicorn prince, appears in a French My Little Pony Friendship is Magic magazine.

The term is used in various modern fantasy novels, originating in the novel, Bearing an Hourglass by Piers Anthony, and has been used extensively so in The Halfblood Chronicles series, however until the late 20th century it was only used to denote the horn of a unicorn or the material it's made of. The word in its new sense is said to be derived of Latin "ala" meaning "wing", and "cornu" meaning "horn", however no sources are cited for this claim.

In fan labor, Alicorns are relatively rare, in keeping with how few of them appear on the actual show or in other official material. However, Lauren Faust is usually depicted as one, based on a drawing of herself; this character is sometimes nicknamed "Fausticorn". A deviantArt user by the name of Willis96 created an OC for Bonnie Zacherle, creator of the original My Little Pony toy line, calling her "Bonniecorn". Like Fausticorn, she is also depicted as an alicorn. Often, she is depicted as Fausticorn's teacher.[B 1][B 2][B 3][B 4]

Original character Alicorns include Nyx and (as a parody of authors who insert themselves into their story as an especially powerful pony) Argembarger, the writer of the spiderses. Also, on occasion and likely from her position as Princess Celestia's pupil and a powerful unicorn, some fans believe that Twilight Sparkle may find herself elevated to Alicorn status. Additionally, some official material features Twilight as an Alicorn, as well,[TA 1][TA 2] including the show as of the season three finale.

Some early fan labor features Rainbow Dash as not only becoming Alicorn, but also as Celestia's secret daughter.[M 1]
